Most childhood colds and coughs pass on their own, but some symptoms signal that something more serious may be going on with your child’s breathing. Knowing the difference can help you decide when to wait it out and when to seek care right away.
Symptoms That Need Prompt Medical Attention
- Fast or labored breathing — breathing noticeably faster than usual, or visible effort with each breath
- Chest retractions — the skin pulling in around the ribs or neck with each breath
- Bluish tint around the lips or fingertips
- Persistent wheezing or grunting sounds while breathing
- Unusual lethargy or difficulty waking/staying alert
- Refusing fluids or signs of dehydration
