A spacer helps your child’s inhaler medication reach the lungs instead of the back of the throat—but only if it’s used correctly. Here’s the step-by-step technique we recommend to families.

Steps for Using a Mouthpiece Spacer

1. Shake the inhaler and attach it to the spacer
2. Have your child breathe out fully, away from the spacer
3. Seal lips around the mouthpiece
4. Press the inhaler once, then breathe in slowly and deeply
5. Hold the breath for about 10 seconds before exhaling
